Ensign is the entry-level commissioned officer's rank in the U.S. Navy, and is equivilent to the rank of Second Lieutenant in the other armed services. Ensigns generally serve on naval vessels as division officers, responsible for leading a crew of seamen and petty officers in a specific division like engineering or administration. The ensign above him flapped restively in tune with the men under his inspection. As Lord High Admiral, James II flew a red ensign and a masthead flag bearing the insignia of that office. The ensign is flown from the peak or truck of the mast, except when directed to be flown at hair-mast.
